Sage 500 needs a facelift, but it's reliable
What do you like best?
Its great for a large company because your able to isolate data to a specific office. It has great internal controls and reporting for audit purposes. It was also great for reporting as you're able to easily pull historical data and export data to pdf/excel. It also has every section categorized, so it was straightforward when you need to create or post anything. I also liked that your able to save your personal reporting filters and also share filters to easily collaborate with people remotely. There so much information that you can find everything you need. We were also able to process anything we needed, we rarely had issues because we knew tricks and how to get the most of it. I would say it took a couple months to get a full handle of the system.
What do you dislike?
It is not user friendly. It is definitely a system you have to be curious about since it has so much functionality it can be easy to get lost/confused. It was also hard navigating from different tasks, it will let you pull different reports at the same time, but when it came to posting anything, it would crash if try to pull up another task. Our PM's really hated creating PO's as it really isn't great for someone that doesn't understand financial systems and sometimes wit would reject creating a PO, but doesn't provide a reason why. It was also not compatible with Mac's so we would need to run it on a remote desktop which was also pretty finicky. There definitely needs to be more reasoning why it doesn't want to post or process something or have a easy user guide with all the errors. It is also not visually appealing.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
This is better for a larger organization and be prepared to invest time on learning. Sage has put this product into maintenance mode, so there is not going to be any significant future development planned for the product. It might make it difficult if it doesn't have one thing you might need. Just make sure this has everything you need and you don't mind the dated interface. Also check you are not needing to run it on a mac otherwise you'll need a remote desktop.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
Used for tracking vendor payments, Accounts Receivable and Revenue Recognition, time-sheet data, Accrued Revenue/WIP reporting, PO's, journal entries. There were a lot of reports we were able to pull to better understand all this data and better track our finances. I found it easy to export and be able to create more digestible reports from all the data is provides. AR was also easy to handle on sage, it was able to populate invoices and posting was also straightforward
