Excellent Open-Source Asset Management Solution for Large and Small Businesses

What do you like best?

Clean, simple interface & highly configurable.

What do you dislike?

Use of collections can be clunky. Difficult to delete assets (although that's probably by design).

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Try it if you're looking at Asset Management options. It's highly capable, competitively priced (if you use Montala to set it up and administer), and easily the best open-source solution out there.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

Managing a variety of digital assets in one cloud-based location. Reduces time needed to review projects; facilitates easy sharing of assets. Low cost, especially if you can install, deploy and manage the system yourself. Montala, who maintains and distributes ResourceSpace, produces frequent software updates, maintains a very active and helpful Google Group, and also sells turnkey installations of the system at very competitive rates compared to other big commercial Digital Asset Management players.

I've tested over 50 digital asset management systems over the last 5 years and actively use and administer 3 different Asset Management platforms. ResoruceSpace is one of the most stable, fastest performing systems on the market. What's great is that it will run happily on some of Amazon's smallest, least powerful servers. While competing system often require much more robust (i.e. more expensive) hosting environments.

ResourceSpace also handles more digital formats (for preview) than just about any other system as well. when properly configured, I haven't found a video file it cannot decode and create a preview for, including just about all professional video formats. It can also preview multi-page PDFs, Adobe Creative Suite files and many document files. It's only weakness is a rather weak accuracy level in creating document previews, but on the flip side, it does a nice job of extracting text from documents and adding it to the files metadata.

All in all, especially if you set this up and administer it yourself, in my opinion it's the best open-source solution out there, and is still a top 10 option on the paid side of the spectrum for digital asset management.
