Endnote Online: Free for Students and Integrates Well with Microsoft Word

What do you like best?

As a student, I appreciate that EndNote Online is free and has a user-friendly integration with Microsoft Word. You can use a variety of bibliography styles, which is nice if a journal requires a specific style. Bibliographies are preserved even using Dropbox when multiple users are editing the document. My online library of references is easy to access as long as I have internet and they are not tied to any one device, which allows me to use more than one device when editing a document.

What do you dislike?

It takes more clicks than I would like to add a citation to a document. First, I have to go to Web of Science and find the citation, then I have to import it into EndNote Online, and last I have to use the Endnote Online plug-in in Word to add the citation. It would be great if there were a Chrome plug-in that could add the citation to Endnote Online in one click directly from the journal's webpage (rather than on Web of Science). This would save a lot of clicks and make EndNote more effecient.

Also, if there are brackets anywhere in a document, Endnote interprets them as a citation and will throw an error when it is compiling citations. I have not found a work-around for this yet.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Consider whether or not you need all the features in the Desktop version of EndNote. EndNote Online has been sufficient for my work and I have saved a lot of money by not purchasing EndNote Desktop.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am a graduate student writing scientific manuscripts, grant proposals, and technical reports. Most of my writing projects are collaborative and I have found that EndNote is software that most people are comfortable with or have used in the past. This makes it ideal for collaborative work where everyone needs to work on the same document.
