Free & Open Display Server

What do you like best?

The fact that XServer is open-source is the biggest positive it has, it started with pretty humble beginnings and has transformed over the years to a fully featured, low resource intensive, Display Server, able to run a window manager ( Graphical Display Interface) that offered users a alternative to CLI when using Linux kernels, In my opinion, X server played a integral role in the popularity and usability of Core Linux.

What do you dislike?

It is not up to par with other (Non-Free) offerings, and its kind of difficult to implement, there is definitely a learning curve, but that is Linux for you, if you didn't want to learn and have the power to do anything, you would use windows.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Xserver is the backbone of any Linux based Operating System, handling the GUI / Window system, it cant run without it or a similar program, unless you want strictly terminal based OS; but even then, it helps render and display. So get used to that manual and jump right in!

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

The transformation from strictly CLI programs (Think the AS400; it was the classic black on green font) to being able to handle multiple "screens" when working with a terminal session. This is basically windows but in a terminal. The ability to have multiple screens open within such a session, greatly enhanced the productivity as it makes it easy to switch back and forth seamlessly between multiple threads without closing. hence introducing the background processes, this contributed to building a free and open source GUI, Loosening the grip Windows has on the OS market and allowing for real innovation and hopefully one day we will see a Linux based OS top both Mac & Windows. Without Xserver&Xorg this would not be possible.
