Advanced user of Smart UPSThe internal components are solid. The power conditioning has always been dependable. Over the long run, battery replacements are very cost effective. We've typically gone about 10 years per UPS, with battery swaps every few years, and never had any issues. They would probably run even longer, but we haven't been brave enough to try.
Over time batteries will eventually fail, and balloon. The chassis has a limited amount of space for removing these batteries, so it's sometimes a fight to get the ballooned batteries out of the chassis.
We have occasionally tested other products in a similar price range to Smart UPS, and we've never found the level of reliability. For the price, they seem to be the best one out there. The SmartConnect functionality they now offer is great too. Often times we found it cost prohibitive to purchase the management cards. This basic level of alerting is perfect for smaller implementations where you want to know about battery lites without needing to visit the datacenter.
Our critical sites all have generators, but need UPS backups to bridge the gap between when the power goes out, and when the generator transfer kicks in. We have realized the benefits of this product in that we have achieved adequate runtime to prevent system outages due to power loss.
