Kubuntu Reviews

Sainathan I.

Advanced user of Kubuntu
★★★★★
The best light weight OS for almost all the basic needs and embedded systems projects.

What do you like best?

The most important thing about Kubuntu is that it's lightweight and easy to use, just like the windows operating system. And also its supports all the open-source software right out of the box like LibreOffice, and it also has its proprietary email service called the Kmail. Since it's designed in the KDE environment, it's much faster than Ubuntu. Best for developing cross-compiled applications and firmware for most of the prototyping boards like Raspberry Pi and STM32.

What do you dislike?

There is not much to dislike from Kubuntu. There is very few lightweight OS in the market that solve the purpose. Some of my projects require Embedded Systems development, and there are few OS explicitly designed for that, and I must say Kubuntu also meets some of those requirements.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Kubuntu is the best fit for all the new people to Linux Environment but wants to have that Windows OS feel. It also helps all the system software engineers who want to write device drivers for their embedded applications. It also features one of the best document viewing and editing tools, like Okular. I would recommend Kubuntu for the electronic design engineers who want to port their current designs to Linux-based systems. You can also install your favourite media apps along side your work apps.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

I am pursuing a career in embedded software development. This job involves developing complex software, especially firmware, that will be running in most of the electronic appliances that we use, such as washing machines and also Cars. Firmware here will be device drivers that need to coding in languages such as C and C++. And most of these devices run Linux, and some appliances also use Android because it's also based on Linux.

So Kubuntu has been beneficial since it provides all the tools such as the G++ compiler and has the best debugger pre-installed for the development. Also, it comes pre-installed with Okular, which is the best document viewer for viewing PDF files.
