If Tableau Desktop can't do it, Tableau Prep will.

What do you like best?

Processing your data through Tableau Prep lets you clean up and manipulate your data so that you can better use it in Tableau Desktop. It also seems to be the only way to extract elements from a PostgreSQL array field. I also like the way you can do more complex joins and then add filters to the results so that you end up with an output that's easier to then work with in Tableau Desktop.

What do you dislike?

Like Tableau Desktop, the interface isn't instantly-intuitive and the learning curve is a little steep at first. Also, as I stated in the Tableau Desktop review, the company's sales team needs to get their act together as it took 3 weeks to fix a back-end licensing issue and to set up invoicing terms for our not-for-profit organization.

Recommendations to others considering the product:

Take advantage of Tableau's online training and sign up for the webinars. They really do help to make things click. Don't be afraid to Google for answers either as there is a large community and I've found the answer to pretty much any issue I've had, or how-to I've been curious about is out there.

What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?

One of my data sources uses a PostgreSQL data source and several of the fields I need to pull from multiple tables use an array data type. Reporting that I do from those tables require me to extract one element from that array. Tableau Desktop alone seems to be unable to do this with the built-in split, but Tableau Prep can and does.
