Math is Apache OpenOffice’s component for mathematical equations. It is most commonly used as an equation editor for text documents, but it can also be used with other types of documents or stand-alone. When used inside Writer, the equation is treated as an object inside the text document. Similarly, one can also insert these into other Apache OpenOffice programs like Calc and Impress.

Advanced user of Apache OpenOffice MathBeside being a free tool, it is very helpful to write and edit formulas in my way and then import them to the text documents or spread sheets. I use Math to write formula to make them more readable and clear to understand.
It is not smart enough to detect the errors in case of complex formula. Its user interface is not so great likely because they are more attentive to the functionality.
I highly recommend my friends and colleagues to use Apache's OpenOffice Math for writing formula / equation and handling formula / equation in Calc or Writer.
I use it with Writer and Calc to treat the equation / formula as an object within the document or spreadsheet. It helps me to write equation / formula in detailed manner.
