Solarwinds SRM - Simplify your multi-vendor storage monitoring
What do you like best?
One single tool that can keep an eye on multiple storage vendor platforms without having the need to open up different vendor specific tools. Simplified and Unified views for different storage devices. Disk failure alerts are extremely useful as with different RAID level configurations, storages can really take care of a few use cases where disk failure can be managed without a problem. Alerting on disk failures can ensure that the storage admin has a proactive replacement strategy for disk failures.
What do you dislike?
Support for older storage platforms and latest storage platforms. The latest storage platforms, though they get supported eventually, there is still a finite time gap between the actual support of the latest storage platforms and the release dates of the Storage Resource Manager from SolarWinds. SolarWinds could publish periodic patches for the SRM solution indicating support for more storage platform vendors.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Confirm and validate if your storage device(s) are supported by the Solarwinds SRM. Additionally, check if your storage device supports SMI-S, SNMP polling and SNMP Traps.
What problems are you solving with the product? What benefits have you realized?
The SRM solution has helped us identify hardware issues on supported storage platforms like faulty disks in arrays that is difficult to do so in RAID configurations. The solution has also helped the storage team to identify performance issues - Read IOPS, Write IOPS, Latencies and many other KPI's of storage platforms. Disk failures are also now managed effectively.
